Derek Hough to Take On Gene Kelly's Iconic Role in Singin' in the Rain

March 1, 2016

Hot on the heels of this rainy performance, I have more watery news. Friends, Derek Hough is slated to take on the role of Don Lockwood—Gene Kelly’s iconic character from one of the greatest movie musicals of all time, Singin’ in the Rain. I’m cautiously optimistic about this.

The musical will appear on Broadway next January, after a run in Paris, and will be choreographed by the award-winning Brit, Stephen Mear. That’s plenty of time for Hough to study Kelly’s effortless, elegant style—and I know I’m not the only one who will be watching closely to see how he honors the role and gives it new life.

Hough performed the title song last year as part of the Radio City Rockettes’ Spring Spectacular. Check it out below.

Recently, his sister and fellow ballroom pro Julianne Hough knocked it out of the park as Sandy in “Grease: Live”. If her stellar performance is any indication of the Hough musical theater gene, than we’ll definitely have something to look forward to!
