What Were the Best Moves of 2014?

March 22, 2017

A still from Sia’s “Chandelier” video.

We love it when dance and movement become so popular, or so powerful, that they not only make their way into the news—they are the news.

So it is with dance critic Brian Schaefer’s roundup for Out magazine of the best moves of 2014. He’s got some of our faves (Hi Maddie! Hi Misty! Hi Taylor!) along with other, more political, moments that we wouldn’t necessarily cover over here at DS, but which were important movement-moments of 2014, nonetheless.

If I could cast a few more votes, I would definitely include Yanis Marshall and his dancers. This year, he showed the internet that anyone can rock heels—regardless of their gender—and rock ’em good.

I also think Wendy Whelan’s farewell performance at New York City Ballet belongs on the list. Even though she’ll still be dancing, she was an NYCB icon who defined an era at the company—and she went out like the star she is, with a farewell-performance premiere.

Are there any other dance or movement moments that should be included on the best of 2014 list? Let us know in the comments section below!
