Dear Katie,
What types of street shoes are good for dancers? I want to look cute—I’m not really a sneaker person—but I also want to take care of my feet outside the studio.

Maddy

Dear Maddy,

I feel your pain! I love wearing heels and cute flats. But the reality is your feet are your life, and unsupportive shoes are just bad for them.

Compromise is key. Look into brands that are known for supportive footwear, like Clarks or Merrell. Most of their options won’t be super-fashionable, but usually you’ll be able to find one style that works for you. If you simply must wear heels, go with wedges, which provide support across your entire foot instead of just at the heel. If it’s sheer height you’re after, try straight-across platform shoes—again, not an ideal option, but better than stilettos.

All that said, if your street shoes are making your feet hurt, bite the bullet and put on some sneakers. Your feet deserve TLC, even if it means sacrificing style.
