Dear Katie,

All the dancers in my level auditioned for a prestigious summer intensive—but I’m the only one who got in. Now everything is incredibly awkward at the studio. I’m really excited about the program, but I don’t want to make my friends feel bad. What can I do?

Dear Danielle,

Congratulations! That’s so exciting. But I’ve been in your situation before, so I know how hard it can be.

Make an effort not to talk about the summer program at your studio. Save all of that excitement for your family at home! Be sure to compliment other dancers when they get a good role or do well in class. You don’t have to go over the top—that will seem like you’re faking it—but give praise when praise is due. Kindness will go a long way.

The thing that will help you most is to simply focus on improving your technique. Other dancers might be jealous of your success, but in the end, there’s nothing you can do about that. Put your energy into the work, not into worrying.
