I feel like I’m so focused on dance that I basically don’t have a social life. It’s not that the other dancers at my studio don’t hang out together—they do! But between homework and classes and rehearsals, I honestly don’t understand how they have the time, and I’m always turning down their invitations. How can I find a better balance?
Oh, if only there were an easy answer to your question. I didn’t really have a social life growing up, either. I know how hard it is.
It’s great that your friends want to include you in activities outside the studio. Try accepting an invitation here and there. Take small steps in that direction, and over time, you’ll figure out a balance that works for you—because it’s different for everyone. If you find that you’re overwhelmed, back off a bit. If you realize that nondance activities actually energize you, make them more of a priority.
Be gentle with yourself. There’s truly no “right” answer here. It’s about finding out what makes you most happy. And if, ultimately, you discover that your social life just has to take a back seat to dancing for now, that’s totally fine!
