Dear Katie,
I love my dance studio—the training is
really good—but we only get to perform twice a year. I really want more stage experience. What can I do?
Camille
Dear Camille,
The good news is that you have several options here. For starters, many dancers take classes at more than one studio. I did this when I was younger, mainly to get more jazz training. I know it’s not always feasible—some studios have strict policies about that kind of thing—but if it’s allowed, you could end up with twice the performance opportunities.
I’d also suggest looking into dance competitions. Don’t worry about trying to win. Instead, use them as extra chances to perform on a big stage. Master classes are also a part of most competition weekends, so you’ll get to take class with world-renowned teachers—an additional benefit.
The most extreme option is to change studios altogether. If performing is your number-one priority, seek out a studio with a youth company. That is, hands-down, the best way to get lots of stage time.
