"DWTS" Week 8 Recap

May 9, 2016

With only six couples remaining in Season 22 of “Dancing with the Stars,” it’s given that the talent’s running deep—and this was definitely confirmed during last night’s episode. But in true “DWTS” fashion, no one was safe from a #PlotTwist. This time, it was in the form of the Judges’ Team Up Challenge. I’ll break it down for you: Each judge was paired with two celebs to choreograph a group dance for them (Bruno was paired with Nyle and Jodie, Len was paired with Ginger and Wanyá and Carrie Ann was paired with Antonio and Paige). But what’s a plot twist without a little more plot twist? The judges awarded the couples scores, but so did the viewers…in real time. And America was not impressed, giving 9s across the board.

But I digress. There’s dancing to be discussed. Highlights below!

Jodie Sweetin and
Keo Motsepe
‘s Jive
was electrifying, authentic and technically amazing. Sweetin’s improved so much, thanks in large part to her adorable, nurturing connection with Motsepe. It was so much fun to watch, and that’s what dance is really about at the end of the day. The judges agreed, and awarded the duo their first perfect 30/30.

Nyle DiMarco and
Peta Murgatroyd
‘s Paso Doble
was beyond inspiring—so inspiring that Carrie Ann and host Erin Andrews were brought to tears. Why? DiMarco’s proven himself as the show’s first deaf contestant week after week, so in the middle of last night’s performance, the music cut out (on purpose) and the couple danced in silence. It was a beautifully symbolic way to relay to audiences what DiMarco experiences on a regular basis.

But if you’ve watched this show long enough, you’ll know a plot twist isn’t a plot twist without a third PLOT TWIST. After dancing her heart out, improving nonstop, earning a perfect score and just being an all-around bubbly beacon of light, Jodie Sweetin was eliminated, along with her pro, Keo Motsepe. I’ll leave it up to you to decide if America made the wrong choice (um, yes). Share your thoughts in the comments, and join us next week for what’s sure to be another intense recap as we tango/jive/waltz our way closer to declaring the new Mirror Ball champs.
