From Japan with Love
…Or, with 恋 (pronounced “koi”), to be more exact!
Okay, explanation time: This year, Japan saw a TV drama—kind of like an American soap opera, but
much more popular—called 逃げるは恥だが役に立つ! (Direct translation: “To Escape is Shameful But Useful!” You can already tell that this is going to be amazing, right?)
The show’s theme song (“Koi,” by Gen Hoshino) gave birth to its own viral dance choreographed by MIKIKO, who makes the moves for several major girl groups in Japan. It’s called—you got it—“Koi Dansu,” or “Love Dance.”
Earlier this month, Ambassador to Japan Caroline Kennedy and employees at Japan’s US Embassies and Consulates got in on the fun, recording their (surprisingly polished) version of the dance, complete with the Ambassador rocking a Santa suit.
If the comments on the YouTube video are any indication, I’m not the only one feeling the love. Just a few reactions from Japanese users?
“SO CUTE…”
“What a wonderful surprise!”
“Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone in the world were this happy?”
Yaaaaaaaaaas. Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go master the Love Dance like my 2017 depends on it.
