"SHINE" Is the Salsa-Dance Movie We've Waited For

October 4, 2018

And it hits select movie theaters across the country TODAY.

Hip-hop has Step Up. Ballet has Center Stage. Jazz has Chicago. And now, salsa has SHINE, the Kickstarter-funded flick that you’re about to be completely obsessed with.

Set in NYC, SHINE tells the story of two Puerto Rican brothers from Spanish Harlem separated by tragedy who come together again through salsa dance years later—but on opposing sides of the issue of gentrification. Ralphi comes back after seven years away to develop commercial real estate in his old neighborhood. He soon encounters his estranged brother, Junior, who followed in their father’s footsteps to become an elite salsa dancer and an unwavering activist against gentrification of their neighborhood. When the new owner of their father’s dance studio reveals she’s behind on mortgage payments, Junior rallies the local dance community to raise funds to save the studio.

Based on the intense, dance-filled trailer, this looks to be the kind of drama-suffused, choreo-heavy flick that we—and salsa—deserve. So what are you waiting for? Find out if the movie is playing near you! (Maybe leave the littlest ones at home, though: SHINE is rated R for strong language.)
