So You Want to Be a Brooklynette?

June 3, 2017

If you’ve ever dreamed of joining an NBA dance team, this is YOUR MOMENT. Next Saturday, June 10, the Brooklyn Nets’ (totally fierce) Brooklynettes dance team is holding an open call audition at Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus. Think you have what it takes?

First, make sure you:

  • Are 18 or older
  • Have extensive training in hip hop and jazz
  • Are available for a potential callback on June 11, and (if you become a finalist!) in the evening on June 12 & 13

We already know the Brooklynettes are incredible—we put three of their most talented dancers on our April 2015 cover. To give DS readers that extra leg up in next weekend’s auditions, we looked back at the audition advice that (above, left to right) former Brooklynettes Liz Chestang and Amanda Robinson and current team member Anna Smyczynski had to offer hopefuls…

“Train like crazy. And take lots of different classes to improve your versatility. Yes, we do a lot of hip hop, but we also have Afro-Caribbean and jazz numbers.” —LC

“At the audition, let your true self shine. Don’t try to be someone you’re not. Be genuine.” —AR

“Always believe in what you’re doing. Don’t let anyone put you off track. You can make things happen—it’s about will, not just talent.” —AS

Merde to everyone auditioning on Saturday! May the fierce be with you.
