Dear Katie,
I got a great scholarship to a local dance school’s summer program. I also got accepted, with no scholarship, to my dream summer intensive in NYC. Money is definitely
an issue for my family, but the idea of missing
the opportunity to train at such a great school makes me so sad. What should I do?
Eliana
Dear Eliana,
First of all, congratulations! This is a tricky situation, and I believe this is a serious conversation to have with your parents. Sit them down and explain what going to that dream summer program would mean to you. Only you and your parents can decide which course of action to take. But here are a few thoughts that could help you. I would contact the big school and ask about financial aid. Often, schools are happy to help out, but most students don’t know that’s even a possibility. I would see if your family qualifies for that kind of aid. Don’t be afraid to speak up! If you end up going to your local school, remember this: You can improve anywhere. As long as you’re focused, working hard, applying corrections, and staying committed, it doesn’t matter how big or famous the school is. If you put your mind to something, you can achieve it. So rest assured that no matter what, you’ll improve this summer.
