Six Tips to Help You Achieve Those New Year's Dance Resolutions

Is it just us, or is there still some major positive new year energy in the air? With 2020 being both a new year and a new decade, chances are you’ve set some pretty lofty 2020 goals, especially when it comes to dance. To help keep you on track, here are six tips to keep your new year momentum going strong in the studio.

Tell Someone New

There’s no better friend than accountability when it comes to achieving your resolutions. Take some time to talk to a friend, dance teacher, or mentor about your goals, and make it a habit to update them on your progress on a weekly or monthly basis.

Rethink Your Resolution

If your 2020 resolutions mainly lie in the casting or college acceptance departments, it may be a good idea to refocus them on something more tangible. For example, make it a goal to perfect one audition solo, or to apply to a certain number of colleges before a specific deadline.

Break it Down

365 days is a pretty long time commitment! Break down your big resolution into smaller weekly and monthly goals. That way, you can adjust your goals to work with your current dance schedule, not to mention reward yourself for small victories.

Refocus Your Progress

Nailing 180 degree extensions is a great resolution, but instead of getting out your protractor, measure your progress simply by how often you try. For example, make it a goal to complete extension-improving exercises a certain number of times per week.

Write it Down

Writing down your goals
, as well as your progress, gives you something to look back on when you feel your motivation start to waver. You’ll be able to see how far you’ve come, and create a plan you can stick to moving forward.

Remember Your ‘Why’

Your goals should be manageable, but feel free to keep dreaming big. Remind yourself of why you set your resolutions in the first place, and most importantly, keep that reminder in a place where you’ll see it every day.
