Imagine Tap!

February 22, 2010

It was a beautifully calm day yesterday in NYC. The sun was shining, the wind was barely blowing and the city seemed peaceful and serene. That is, with the exception of a basement performance space beneath a church on the Upper West Side, where a handful of hoofers were making a whole lotta noise!

One of the best parts about working at Dance Spirit is getting to see so much live action. Yesterday, fellow editor Katie Rolnick and I were treated to a special mid-day performance of Imagine Tap! The show, developed four years ago by extraordinary tappers Derick K. Grant and Aaron Tolson, is a family-friendly, comical show featuring a seriously stellar lineup of dancers: Chloe Arnold, Maud Arnold, Michelle Dorrance, Ray Hesselink, Lee Howard, Jason Janas, Jason Samuels Smith, Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, Jumaane Taylor and more. Beat that! The dancers transition seamlessly from funny pieces (“Three Chefs” and “Mr. Happy”) to sexy numbers (“Latin Ladies”), all the while clearly have a blast onstage. Definitely a great way to spend a Monday afternoon!

Tolson and Grant are hoping the show will hit the road in the near future for another tour—and so are we! For more info, visit www.imaginetap.net.
