Ohmigod you guys! Elle Woods is in New Jersey!
Legally Blonde: The Musical
will forever be one of my favorite Broadway musicals. From the catchy tunes (“So Much Better” is among my favorite running songs) to the stellar choreography (by Jerry Mitchell, man he’s good), watching the show is like being at a party that you never want to end.
I’ll admit, I didn’t want to love the show. The original film, starring painfully adorable Reese Witherspoon, was so good. How could the Broadway show make it even better? I thought that the idea of Elle Woods singing was ridiculous.
But then, while putting together Dance Spirit‘s Broadway issue in 2008, I went to the show. And I loved it. Not just loved it—loved it. Like, stayed-up-until-midnight-downloading-the-entire-soundtrack loved it. Laura Bell Bundy, who played Elle Woods at the time, was genius. Her comedic timing was brilliant and she nailed the role. She certainly gave Reese Witherspoon a run for her money. Also, the show features some seriously adorable dogs who are incredibly well-trained. The audience went nuts for them.
Sadly, the show closed on Broadway last year. Didn’t get a chance to see it on the Great White Way? You’re in luck: The showstopper, now on its national tour, has touched down in Newark, NJ, for the week! So grab your girlfriends and head to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) between now and June 6 to catch this hilariously entertaining hit.
Go see the show. Do it for me and my love for hot pink and showtunes. You’ll leave the theater filled with joy and girl-power. Tickets can be purchased online at www.njpac.org, by phone at 1-888-GO-NJPAC, or in person at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center box office at One Center Street in Newark, NJ.
