Panorama Rehearsals

June 12, 2008

Hello dancers!

I just got out of rehearsal for Panorama and I am SO PUMPED! We learned the work in only five days and have been cleaning it up for less than a week. We are performing with the Martha Graham Dance Company tomorrow night at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center and our dress rehearsal is tonight! We’re all getting excited because we have been rehearsing so intensely that it feels like we’ve been preparing for months now. However, we will face some challenges besides the choreography. Since SPAC is an amphitheatre with lawn seating, it is a nightmare for people like me who suffer from allergies because the stage always has pollen on it, regardless of how much the crew sweeps. Can you imagine how embarrassing it would be to have a sneezing fit onstage!?!? I don’t even want to think about it.

I have always been interested in photography, but when I was the style intern for DS last summer, I developed an interest specifically in photographing dancers. Being here with the MGDC has been paradise for me because I get to practice capturing movement by sitting in on company rehearsals. All the dancers are so beautiful and really know how to create moments within the choreography. It has helped me understand how precise each movement needs to be, which helps me with my technique. After all, there’s no such thing as a dull contraction.

Now I’m off to media class and then it will be time to prepare for tonight’s dress rehearsal. I’m dreading having to put all that make-up on my face. Sweat, base, fake eyelashes, and mosquitoes cannot be a good combination. I’ll update you all early next week about how the performance goes! Be well!
