Jazzing It Up


The Alonzo King LINES Ballet is adding a kick to its fall home season by collaborating with jazz pianist Jason Moran. The San Francisco–based contemporary ballet company will perform a world premiere set to Moran’s compositions, along with its hit repertoire piece The Moroccan Project to live Moroccan music by El Hamideen. Superstar Shen Wei


Did you love the 2008 Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremonies? Want more? You’re in the luck! Shen Wei, the Olympic Ceremonies choreographer, brings Shen Wei Dance Arts to Portland, OR, this month. Wei’s company will perform RE:I and RE:III, based on Wei’s personal experiences in Tibet and China. Nov 11;

A Fräulein Frenzy


Take a little do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti and add some popping, locking and breaking to get a taste of Doug Elkins & Friends’ performance of Fräulein Maria. This urban musical is a hysterical spoof on The Sound of Music that includes a “Do Re Me” club party and a beat-dropping hip-hop solo to “Climb Every Mountain.” Catch it this month in Philadelphia, PA. ABT Goes to Beijing


For the first time, American Ballet Theatre will travel to China’s capital city to perform at the new National Centre for the Performing Arts. The company’s program will include the full-length ballet Don Quixote, as well as repertory works from its Avery Fisher Hall season. Nov 12–13;
