So You Think You Think You Can Audition?: The Scoop on Season 7

March 8, 2010

“Mia’s back?!” That was the first thing “So You Think You Can Dance” hopefuls exclaimed at the show’s NYC auditions in January. But we wouldn’t

believe it until we got word from executive producer Nigel Lythgoe—or from Mia Michaels herself. Nigel, Mia and Adam Shankman took some time to chat with DS about their favorite contestants, the future of the show and whether or not Mia really is back. Season 7 premieres May 27.

Dance Spirit:
What kind of dancer do you want to see win Season 7?

Adam Shankman:
The best technical dancer has never won the show. It would be great to see that dancer have the best personality and win.

DS
: Who have been your favorite past contestants?

Nigel Lythgoe:
tWitch, because he used humor in his dancing. He always did something different. I also loved Hok and Russell.

Mia Michaels:
Travis, Danny, Mark, Jaimie and Katee.

AS:
Jakob Karr.

DS
: What’s your advice to “SYTYCD” hopefuls?

NL:
If you don’t engage the judges, people won’t vote for you. You have to be a good dancer, but personality wins.

MM:
Find your own unique voice as a dancer. We see the same movement over and over every year. People say, ‘So and so did this before and got on the show,’ and they do the same thing. But we’ve already been there.

AS:
Find the joy inside of you—the reason why you dance—and explore that in your performance.

DS
: Mia—are you back?

MM:
Well, I’m here at auditions.

NL:
She’s back.
