"SYTYCD" Season 8: Viva Las Vegas Week

June 8, 2011

Vegas Week on “So You Think You Can Dance” is sort of like a fever dream. At the time, each moment makes sense. But when you wake up, you’re not sure how (or why) you thought that flying unicorn had stolen your wallet. Oh wait, that was my actual fever dream. In the “SYTYCD” version, dozens of dancers flash across the screen. They leap and turn, leap and turn, leap and turn. A dancer injures herself, while another is taken away by the medic. And Cat Deeley, a cool breeze of calm, appears every so often to keep you sane amidst the maniacally fast-paced ride.

Needless to say, I was a little overwhelmed by last night’s show. So instead of a play-by-play, here’s what I hope to see more (and less) of in the coming season:

Of Sasha and Natalia Mallory. These sisters are super fun to watch. They banter, they poke fun and each knows how to boost the other’s confidence. Not to mention their contemporary dancing brings a much-needed dose of funk to the show.

Flashbacks! During the Broadway round, Rebecca Hart and Jeremiah Hughes were partnered to dance Tyce Diorio’s choreography. Rebecca had been to Vegas Week before and we saw a flashback of her getting comments from Nigel—ohmygod that mane! Remember when Nigel had long, flowing locks? Sort of like this, only more English.

Dancing. I know, it’s coming soon. But last night, I just wanted to see more. Each time one group started to perform, they cut to another and then another. So it goes when there are still a gajillion dancers left in the game. But I’m ready to see a full routine.

Robert Roldan
. Yeah, I know he was just there to assist Travis Wall during the contemporary round, but he’s beautiful. I wouldn’t mind if he showed up as an All-Star later in the season. Just sayin.

Less…

Hating on strangeness. At the very beginning of the show, Marlon Pelayo danced a solo in a totally insane unitard. Yeah, it was weird. But since when has “SYTYCD” been against weird outfits? (Calling Kupono to the stage…)

Crying. I get it. People are still getting cut in droves and they’re tired and this is their dream and blah, blah, blah. But seriously, it starts to feel like an Oprah giveaway episode. Only sad.

Alright, so what do you want to see more of? What could you do without? Tell us everything on Twitter and Facebook. And don’t forget to check back tomorrow morning for our thoughts on the Top 20!
