The Obama Dance

January 18, 2009

I’m writing you from Washington, D.C., where I’m covering the inauguration of Barack Obama. Yesterday I was standing in the press section at the foot of the Lincoln Memorial for the pre-inaugural concert that was broadcast on HBO. The event was jammed with starpower: Tom Hanks, will.i.am, Beyonce, Bruce Springsteen, U2… The list of celebs is a couple dozen deep. But there were no dancers, except one…

The boss.

And I don’t mean Bruce Springsteen.

I was positioned probably 100 yards or so from the Obama family, who watched the concert from the stage behind a protective glass wall. I was just close enough to see the president-elect’s feet, which were tapping to the beats… And his head, which was moving to the rhythm.

When Stevie Wonder sang, the incoming commander in chief stood up, grabbed his daughter Sasha’s hands, and shook his booty to the floor.

Keep an eye on him. I have a feeling dance could become an “executive” art form!
