There is a dance life beyond "SYTYCD!"

October 14, 2009

On last night’s episode of “So You Think You Can Dance” (which, by the way, was awesome), Debbie Allen made a great point. When a dancer on the verge of being cut had an all-out emotional breakdown, she gently told him that “It’s just ‘So You Think You Can Dance.'” Getting cut from the show isn’t the end of the world—seriously!

As dancers, we at DS hope you understand this point as well. Reality competition shows have become hugely popular—and they’re insanely fun to watch—but just because you’re not a contestant or get cut after an audition doesn’t mean you don’t have a future as a dancer. In fact, look at how many successful dancers there are today who haven’t been involved in the show (ahem, Wendy Whelan, Julie Kent, Keltie Colleen and Kathryn Morgan, to name a select few).

So while we’d love to see you all on our favorite show, there is life beyond dancing on TV. There are ballet companies, modern companies, show tap performances and flash mob opportunities around every corner. While you’re waiting for that big break, seize every opportunity you can. We’re here cheering you on, so go for it!

In other news, we’ve heard Mia Michaels has resigned from the show. We’re sad to see her go but thrilled to see what she’ll do next. Stay tuned to dancespirit.com/ or follow us on Twitter (www.twitter.com/Dance_SpiritMag) for the latest updates.
