This Dance Video Using Facial Projections Is Both Cool and Terrifying

April 2, 2017

What happens when fabulous dance duo Aya Bambi, artist Nobumichi Asai, design studio WOW and the University of Tokyo’s Ishikawa Watanabe Laboratory get together? A dance video featuring crazy facial projections that’s as mesmerizing as it is horrifying.

Seriously: “INORI (Prayer)” is going to haunt our dreams for a while. The minute-long video uses a super high-speed projector (it projects 1000 frames per SECOND) and advanced facial mapping technology to transform the two dancers’ faces in real time. And we’re not talking about cute, Snapchat-filter-esque transformations. The dancers cry blood tears, turn into clowns, grow second pairs of eyes.

It’s weird and awesome and unlike anything you’ve seen. Take a look—and then learn more about how the team made this magic happen in the behind-the-scenes video.
