The Danciest Moments From Last Night's Tony Awards

June 10, 2018

As usual, the Tony Awards 2018 were a musical theater lovers dream come true. There’s nothing better than seeing some of our favorite dancers perform their hearts out on the iconic Radio City Music Hall stage, and we were seriously inspired by the power of theater in the process.

First things first, we were not at all surprised that ballet world aficionado Justin Peck scored the Best Choreography Award for his work in the Carousel revival. The male dancers in the cast performed “Blow High, Blow Low” and it was evident that his choreo was truly something special.

Congrats, Peck! 🎉👏🏆 We hope there are many more Broadway moments to come.

Oh, and Tony Awards, we have a bone to pick with you: Why is the Best Choreography Award announcement and acceptance speech almost never televised?! Peck won his award during a commercial break last night and we got to see about .2 seconds of his moment of glory. Last time we checked, dance is a pretty important part of musical theater…just sayin’. 😏🤷

We did love getting to see one of our fave dancers, Jess LeProtto—who’s currently performing in Carousel—pop up centerstage with hosts Josh Groban and Sara Bareilles during the pair’s opening number. We also loved that the song highlighted the seriously hardworking ensemble members of Broadway’s biggest shows.

👋 Hi, Jess! And if you can’t get enough of Jess, make sure you get a copy of our July/August issue where he gives us the deets on everything from his most embarrassing onstage moments to the things that always make him laugh.

ICYMI, here’s the cast of Carousel‘s stunning performance:

We also loved watching former DS covergirl Ariana DeBose SLAY her performance as Disco Donna with the cast of Summer: The Donna Summer Musical. Her dance moves were front and center, and she was also nominated for a Best Featured Actress Award.

GET. IT. GIRL.

Here’s the full performance:

And even though the night’s Best Musical Award went to a show sans a ton of dancing (The Band’s Visit), we had SO much fun watching our favorite contenders perform their showstopping numbers. Ever since they graced our April cover, the dancers of Mean Girls will always be our favorite nice kids; it was so exciting to see Camille A. Brown’s authentic and energetic Afro-Caribbean moves for the Once on this Island revival highlighted on the Tony stage; and Squidward’s full-out spectacular from SpongeBob SquarePants made our tap-tastic, kick-lining hearts explode. Check out the performances below—and for even more Great White Way coverage, don’t miss our annual July/August Broadway Issue, out now!

And that’s a wrap on the best theater night of the season. Until next year, Tony’s!
