Misty Copeland Named One of the Most Fascinating People of 2015
As we all know by now, Misty Copeland is having one heck of a year. First, there was that #casual promotion to principal dancer at American Ballet Theatre, making her the first African American to hold the position. Then there were magazine covers, a documentary and some late-night tv appearances. And earlier this fall it was announced she was producing a new dance drama tv show for Fox. Get. It. Girl.
As if all that weren’t enough, she squeezed in one last year-end crowning achievement: Barbara Walters named her one of the “10 Most Fascinating People of 2015,” alongside celebrities like Amy Schumer and Caitlyn Jenner.
Absolutely stunning, per usual. (screenshot via ABC News)
Misty Copeland’s interview with Walters aired this weekend and is quite possibly the most inspiring thing we’ve seen all year. First, Walters calls her a “trailblazer in a tutu,” a phrase we are officially adopting as our 2016 mantra.
Then, Copeland details the obstacles she’s overcome on the path to her success, talking about everything from her family’s financial hardships to her struggles with racism in the ballet world. There’s also a gorgeous video/photo montage highlighting her best dance moments, as well as tons of throwback videos that are beyond adorable.
The defining moment? Barbara’s very last question. “Finish this sentence for me: Misty Copeland is…?”
“Strong,” Copeland replies. #CHILLS.
Cheers, Misty! We hope 2016 is just as huge for you.
